Causes and symptoms of malaria

Anyone can get malaria.

If a malaria-infected mosquito bites you, symptoms usually appear between 7 and 18 days, but can take weeks or months. In this time, the parasite has multiplied and is infecting your red blood cells.

This causes the symptoms of malaria, including:

  • High temperature (fever)
  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Sweats and chills
  • Vomiting

Although these sound like flu symptoms, malaria is a serious illness that can lead to death. Emergency treatment should be sought as soon as you notice any signs or symptoms, even if you have been taking antimalarials.

Taking precautions before you travel, like proper bite prevention and getting the right antimalarials, means that you can give yourself the best chance against malaria — leaving you free to enjoy your trip.
